Field technician for eastern small-footed bat project

Field Technician-MYLE

Indiana State University is recruiting one (1) Field Technician to aid in a radio telemetry study on eastern small-footed bats and to collect passive acoustic data for a long term study on the effects of forest management on bat activity. The center of field activities will be Tellico Plains, Tennessee and housing will be provided.

MAJOR DUTIES: Research will involve using radio telemetry to track eastern small-footed bats (Myotis leibii) to day-roosts, measuring habitat characteristics around roosts, and assisting with PIT tag insertion. It will also include deploying Anabat detectors for passive monitoring in northern hardwood forests in study sites on the border of southeastern Tennessee and southwestern North Carolina. From mid-May through mid-August, the incumbent will work with a graduate student to accomplish project objectives. From mid-August through early October, the incumbent will work alone to accomplish the objectives. Duties will also include driving (field vehicle will be provided, 4WD is necessary), hiking long distances in mountainous terrain (up to 10 miles/day), carrying heavy equipment, data entry, and data management. The work will be conducted in remote locations on the Cherokee National Forest and Nantahala National Forest.

LOCATION: Tellico Plains, TN is the nearest town to the field site. It is a town of about 1,000 residents. Amenities around the area include white-water rafting, hiking, biking, fishing, swimming, and many more outdoor activities. The field site is along a national scenic byway called the Cherohala Skyway, which offers amazing views of the Appalachian Mountains. The nearest larger cities are Knoxville, TN and Asheville, NC.

TOUR OF DUTY: Temporary (~4.5 months), full-time (37.5 hr/wk), mid May-early October 2012. Pay is $1150/month + housing and field vehicle. The end date is somewhat negotiable but the technician must be able to stay until past the beginning of fall semester, so this job is not suitable for those who plan to enroll in classes in Fall 2012.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: B.S. degree in Wildlife, Natural Resources, Biology or other related field. Proficiency with radio tracking. Capable of navigating using GPS and topographic maps. Ability to work with others as well as alone. Willingness to live alone in a remote location. Ability to make independent decisions without daily supervision. Must have a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and be in good physical condition. Applicants who have completed the pre-exposure series of rabies vaccinations will be given priority, but ISU will pay for vaccinations for individuals who are otherwise highly qualified. Must possess a valid driver's license and pass driving record check.

APPLICATION PROCESS: To apply for this position, send resume, cover letter, and names of three references to Tara Thomson at tarathomson1@gmail.com. Applications are due by 9 March, 2012.
