Description

4 technicians are needed to assist a PhD student’s research studying bat-forest-insect interactions in south-central Indiana. Research involves mist-netting to capture and tag bats, homing telemetry to locate diurnal roosts, and triangulation telemetry to track nocturnal foraging behavior. Additional responsibilities include vegetation plots and insect capture. Research will be conducted within the study areas of the Hardwood Ecosystem Experiment (http://www.heeforeststudy.org/) near Bloomington, Indiana. Work begins 20 May 2019 and is expected to end 16 August 2019 (start/end dates negotiable for excellent candidates).

Required Qualifications

-Applicants should be enrolled in or have completed a BA or BS in Biology, Wildlife Biology, Ecology or related field.

-Ability to work alone and in groups

-Good physical condition for hiking and carrying up to 30 lbs.

-Must be able to take detailed and accurate field notes and record data according to protocol.

-Willing to work long, irregular hours, including weekends and nights, under varied and adverse conditions, including rugged terrain and dense brush where exposure to poison ivy and insects are inevitable.

-Must possess a valid driver’s license

-GPS, map reading, and orienteering skills

-A good attitude, a sense of humor, and the ability to live and work well with others.

 

Preferred Qualifications

-Experience with radio-telemetry

-Candidates wishing to handle bats are required to obtain rabies pre-exposure vaccinations or provide a recent titer check (from last 2 years).
